A better approach to cancer care
Community leaders play a unique role in improving cancer care.
In fact, the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute (VPCI) is named for
a leader who exemplified the kind of partnership that can arise
among a community, doctors and patients.
Virginia Piper was able to bring together physicians from multiple
organizations and form what is today Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
She understood that to continue growing and advancing the frontlines
of care, a hospital needs continual input from people outside the
organization.
All of the cancer programs within VPCI regularly bring together
patients and their families to carefully listen to their observations
about health care and what we might do as caregivers to best help
people. It is in this way our programs are responsive and ever-evolving.
Community members have always stepped forward with their gifts
to meet the needs of Abbott Northwestern Hospital and VPCI. This
is particularly evident in the many memorials and honorary gifts
that VPCI receives.
The support of donors has made possible:
- new cancer research studies
- nurse training and education programs
- investments in patient care, and
- key improvements for patients and families on the VPCI unit
of the hospital.
Today, the legacy of Virginia Piper carries on. We are grateful
that members of the Piper family continue to invest in the hospital
to help it become the best it can be. They are joined by other community
leaders playing pivotal roles, such as the leaders of the Vision
Campaign and the many donors to the Vision Campaign. |
