Midwife Services

Midwives regard pregnancy and childbirth as natural processes. Nurse-midwives can provide individualized and holistic care to families at Abbott Northwestern's Birth Center.

For more information, call Health Partners at 952-967-7619 or Diamonds Women's Center in Edina 952-927-4045. These clinics provide the midwifery service at Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s Birth Center.

What is a nurse-midwife?
The term midwife means "with woman." According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), midwives provide a wide range of services during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period for mother and infant. They coordinate family planning and general health care for women of all ages.

The certified nurse-midwife works closely with an obstetrician/gynecologist to meet an individual’s needs in the safest, most family-centered way.

A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has advanced training and certification from the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACMN Certification Council, Inc.) Midwives are also licensed by the state in which they practice.
