What is a nurse-midwife?
The term midwife means "with woman." According to the American College
of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), midwives provide a wide range of services during pregnancy,
childbirth, the postpartum period for mother and infant. They coordinate family
planning and general health care for women of all ages.
The certified nurse-midwife works closely with an obstetrician/gynecologist to
meet an individual’s needs in the safest, most family-centered way.
A certified nurse-midwife is a registered nurse who has advanced training and
certification from the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACMN Certification
Council, Inc.) Midwives are also licensed by the state in which they practice.
