In 1998, Abbott Northwestern Hospital expanded its housing commitment and joined with the Phillips Partnership to announce the Joe Selvaggio Housing Initiative. The initiative, covering an eight-block area west of the hospital, raised $7.5 million to improve 40 multi-family housing units, make exterior improvements to
72 single-family residences, and add new street lighting along Chicago and Portland avenues.
Selvaggio, an Abbott Northwestern Hospital board member throughout the 1990s,
guided a renewal of the hospital’s community focus, including investments in housing
and workforce development.
The motto, “give me a fish and I eat for a day; teach me to fish and I eat for
a lifetime,” expresses Joe’s commitment to “give a hand up” to the people of Phillips,
working quietly – one family, one house, one street corner, one budding entrepreneur
at a time.
