Jennifer Blair, L.Ac. Ma. O.M., Acupuncturist
Jennifer holds a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine from the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences University. She is NCCAOM certified in Acupuncture and Chinese Herbology, and holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In addition to her work at Abbott, Jennifer serves on the faculty at the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine at Northwestern Health Sciences University. Whether working with students or patients, education is at the root of Jennifer’s approach to Chinese medicine. She is an active member of the Acupuncture and O.M. community in the Twin Cities and is the current legislative Chair and former Vice President for the Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Association of Minnesota.
Gary Carlson, MD
Gary Carlson is Board Certified in Family Medicine, Holistic Medicine, and is Board eligible in medical acupuncture. His focus at the George Institute is doing comprehensive chronic disease and chronic medical problem consults. The goal of these consults is to develop patient centered programs of healing that integrate the best of traditional and complementary/alternative medical care. He spent 2004 on a Bush Fellowship studying integrative medicine and presently sees patients at the George Institute as well as doing integrative primary care at the Allina Clinic-Northfield.
Nancy Cox, RN, healing coach, Integrative Medicine Nurse Clinician
Nancy has been a nurse at Abbott Northwestern Hospital for 30 years. Prior to her position with the George Institute, she worked as a mental health nurse clinician and care coordinator. She is trained as a Cancer Guide through the Center for Mind Body Medicine in Washington, D.C. She has been a Therapeutic Touch Practitioner since 1978, is a Certified Reconnective Healing Practitioner, and is certified in Integrative Imagery. Nancy is also a musician, and a singer/songwriter who performs for ceremonies, healing conferences and retreats both locally and nationally.
Kate Darkstar, NCTMB
Kate is a nationally certified massage therapist, Reiki Master and member of Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals (ABMP). She graduated from the Minneapolis School of Massage and Bodywork in 1989. An active supporter of complementary therapies at Abbott Northwestern, she has provided massage therapy to hospital employees, volunteers, visitors, patients and their family members for the past 14 years.
Robert Decker, R. Ph., L.Ac., Acupuncturist
Bob is a registered pharmacist who has had a life-long interest in different forms of healing. In addition to his knowledge in Western medicine, he has extensive knowledge in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Eastern herbs. He is also a Licensed Acupuncturist, as well as a certified instructor for Medical Qi Gong, Reiki, Kofutu, and Energy Medicine.
Carolyn Denton, MA, LN, Nutritionist
As a Licensed Nutritionist Carolyn’s work focuses on nutrition not only in terms of general health and disease prevention, but also as complementary therapy for existing chronic and degenerative diseases. In addition to nutritional counseling, she has developed and implemented nutritional programs addressing specific health concerns. She has also designed and conducted numerous large-group patient education programs as well as delivering nutrition education in a variety of corporate settings.
Henry Emmons, MD
Henry Emmons, MD, is a psychiatrist who uses mind-body and alternative therapies in his clinical work. He has conducted workshops and retreats for health-care professionals on psychopharmacology, natural therapies for depression, the use of mindfulness meditation and health realization in medicine, resilience training, and the evolution from clinician to healer. Dr. Emmons has received training in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction from Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn and completed a Bush fellowship studying the integration of natural and alternative therapies in psychiatry. He has co-developed and facilitated “A Year of Living Mindfully” and “The Inner Life of Healers” programs through the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing. He practices general and holistic psychiatry and consults to several colleges and organizations in and around Minneapolis-St. Paul. In addition, he currently practices general psychiatry at the Allina Medical Clinic Northfield.
John Falls, L. Ac., M.OM., Acupuncturist
John started with medicine early on when he often observed surgeries with his father, a thoracic surgeon. At 19 he was a volunteer for a county rescue squad. His journey has taken him from Emergency Medicine, Massage Therapy, Mankind Facilitation Training Program, Sweat Lodge Ceremony Apprenticeship, to ultimately a five-year education in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Following graduation from George Washington University, his graduate studies were at Northwestern Health Science University's Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, where he now teaches. At the George Institute, John integrates Eastern and Western Medicine to improve the quality of life for people who are enduring chronic pain, cancer, and general wellness in an environment of warm-heartedness.
Megan Hatch, RYT, Healing Arts Practitioner
Megan Hatch is a Registered Yoga Teacher and certified Kripalu yoga practitioner who has been practicing and studying yoga for over 12 years. She provides therapeutic yoga instruction in group classes and individual sessions at the George Institute. Therapeutic yoga incorporates gentle movement, breathing exercises and meditation to promote relaxation and support the healing process. Class and sessions are modified to meet the needs of the individual. Megan is also a professional artist. She curates the monthly Art Of Healing exhibit at the George Instituteand teaches classes on creativity and personal expression.
Marcia Meredith RN, CNP, Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner
Marcia has been a nurse for 28 years. She completed her nurse practitioner masters program in 2002. Her nursing career has included working in oncology, hospice, home care, HIV/AIDS, industry research, and rehabilitation. She has always been interested in holistic options to western medicine and discovered the ancient system of Ayurveda in the mid-1990’s. She began her formal study of Ayurveda at the Wise Earth School of Ayurveda with Swamini Mayatitananda in 1998. She fulfilled a dream by studying with Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico from 2004-2006 and received her certification as an Ayurvedic Practitioner.
Jeremy E. Miller, LMT, NCTMB, BS, Massage Therapist
Therapy training from the renowned Baltimore School of Massage and his Bachelor of Science degree (Biology) from Shepherd College, completing both in 1997. An enthusiastic and passionate instructor, he has taught Anatomy, Professional Ethics, and massage technique classes for some of the most respected massage schools in the nation. Certified in Pre/Postnatal Massage, Nationally Certified for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork, and a WV state Licensed Massage Therapist, Jeremy focuses his work using his anatomy knowledge and numerous assessment techniques to benefit those with chronic tension and pain, reduced mobility, fibromyalgia, TMJ disorder and others.
Peggy Miller, L. Ac., M.OM., Acupuncturist
Peggy Miller is a graduate of the Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Her undergraduate degree is from Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan, and she spent the early years of her career in social justice and social change work which eventually led her into the fields of integrative medicine. She is an adjunct faculty member at Northwestern Health Sciences University, supervising Oriental Medicine students in their clinical work. She serves on the Acupuncture Advisory Council for the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. She is certified in Constitutional Acupuncture Facial Renewal. Peggy is also a writer and artist.
Mark L. Roa, MA, L, Licensed Psychologist and Certified Biofeedback Therapist
Mark Roa has been providing psychotherapy and biofeedback therapy for individuals and multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation teams for 20 years. He is a licensed psychologist and certified biofeedback therapist (Senior Fellow, Biofeedback Certification Institute of America) at the George Institute and with Allina Behavioral Health Services. It is his goal is to provide an individualized, highly meaningful and effective biofeedback therapy experience for each participant. Biofeedback is recognized for its success in treating pain, stress-related problems and other medical conditions such hypertension, tachycardia and headaches.
Ann Stocker, LMT, NCtMB, BS, Massage Therapist
Ann is a nationally certified massage and bodywork therapist specializing in deep tissue massage, sports massage, trigger point therapy, and Swedish relaxation. She is also experienced in craniosacral therapy, lymphatic drainage, reflexology and pregnancy massage. She completed her massage training in 2001 through Northern Lights School of Massage, and is a member of American Massage Therapy Association. Ann holds a Bachelor of Science degree from St. Cloud State University in Mass Communications, Advertising and Public Relations.
Ann focuses her massage work on facilitating the power of the mind, body and spirit to heal itself, contributing to the health and well-being of the individual.
Bobbee Bee Vang, L.Ac. M.OM. B.S., Acupuncturist
Bobbee Bee Vang is a graduate of Northwestern Health Sciences University’s Minnesota College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He completed his undergraduate degree at North Carolina State University. He is currently a Licensed Acupuncturist by the Minnesota Board of Medical Practitioners. Vang’s practice focuses on pain management using traditional Chinese Acupuncture, Tui Na Body-work and herbs.
