Mercy Hospital Adult Volunteer Opportunities

Membership
- Active members volunteer in the hospital and are scheduled for a minimum
of 8 hours each month or as service area requires. Active membership dues
are $5.00.
- Associate members do not volunteer in the hospital. They help support our
activities by paying membership dues of $20.00.
Time Commitment
- Every other week for a minimum of 8 hours each month or as service area
requires.
- 104 hours of service each year.
Requirements
- Attend an orientation.
- Mantoux Test (free of charge)
- MMR Status
- Chicken Pox Immune Status
- Fill out a Criminal Background Study Form as mandated by the Vulnerable
Adult Act.
- Complete HIPAA training (provided at orientation).
- Volunteers must wear a uniform. Information on purchasing the uniform will
be given at the orientation.
- Attend a service area training following placement.
Service Areas
Cancer Resource Center - Greet patients, offer information about
resources and support. Friendly and caring personality required.
Coffee Shop - Fun, fast and friendly atmosphere. Features upscale coffees, soups and sandwiches. Three shifts per day available. Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
Emergency Room Patient Services - This vital area needs volunteers to assist with various duties in the ER area and acting as a liaison between patients, relatives and staff. Friendly and caring personality required. Special qualifications also apply.
Gift Shop Clerk- Come and work for our beautiful gift shop. Four-hour
shifts available, open 7 days a week. Always working with someone. Standing
and walking required and ability to run a cash register.
Information Desk - A team of two volunteers sit at the desk in our east lobby greeting everyone and assisting patients and visitors with information and directions as needed. A warm and friendly voice is needed to make a great impression for all incoming calls. Volunteers aren't required to have all the answers, just a customer-first commitment to service. Fast paced, with some computer work, this vital area is staffed seven days a week with the first shift starting at 7 am. Computer training is provided but previous computer experience a plus!
Intensive Care Waiting Room Receptionist - Provide coffee and a
friendly place for the families of patients. Take messages for staff and families
and coordinate activities in the waiting room. Three shifts available weekdays.
Messenger - If you like to walk , this is the job for you! Deliveries
and errands are a major part of this position. Messengers are stationed at the very busy west entrance visitors' desk, but are usually found bringing flowers or mail to patients or escorting visitors to their destination in the hospital. Must enjoy helping others and keeping busy! Three shifts per day, seven days a week!
Messenger Dispatcher - This person welcomes everyone as they enter our hospital through the west entrance visitors' desk. Responsibilities also include using the computer to provide patient room information to visitors and checking in floral deliveries. Very pleasant personality required, must have a smile in your voice. Mainly sitting, but some walking required. Computer training is provided but previous computer experience a plus! Great service area for early birds - the first shift each day begins at 7 am.
Surgical Admissions and Recovery - This vital area needs volunteers
to assist by making chart packets, helping patients during admitting and discharge, as well as other various duties requested by patient care staff. Compassionate and energetic people looking to serve others should apply. Three shifts per day, weekdays, no Friday nights.
Surgical Waiting Room Receptionist - Assist staff with patients'
families while they are in the waiting room. Many duties, pleasant personality. Available weekdays.
Volunteer Services Receptionist - Greet and provide customer service
to the public, staff and volunteers. Will train in use of phone, copier, fax
and other areas. Knowledge of Microsoft software preferred.
