Allina researcher named 2008 Distinguished ScientistMINNEAPOLIS 04/02/2008--Allina Hospitals & Clinics announced today that Barry Maron, MD, received the Distinguished Scientist Award for Clinical Research from the American College of Cardiology at its annual meeting this week in Chicago, Ill.
The American College of Cardiology has named Barry Maron, MD, director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, the sole recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Scientist Award for Clinical Research.
Dr. Maron is a researcher at the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. The American College of Cardiology award recognizes Dr. Maron's major contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge. Identifying, diagnosing and treating hypertrophic cardiomiopathyDr. Maron is a research pioneer on identifying and the diagnosis and treatment of hypertrophic cardiomiopathy, a genetic anomaly of the heart, which is a leading cause of sudden death. His registries on sudden death in athletes have led to a series of guidelines and other actions to screen young athletes. He is acknowledged internationally as one of the leading experts in this field and has published extensively, with more than 700 articles appearing in peer-reviewed journals on his research. He was the first to suggest the use of defibrillators for hypertrophic cardiomiopathy. One in 500 individuals has this condition. Dr. Maron is the director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Center of the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.
