How to prepare for surgery

Someone from the registration department will call you to get insurance and
other general information, or you can contact them at 651-241-8396. Out of respect
for other patients, please limit the number of people you bring with you.
Food and drink
A nurse from the Day Surgery Center will call you before your surgery to tell
you the time to arrive, what you can and cannot eat or drink before the surgery,
and what to bring with you. Please do not chew gum while at the Day Surgery
Center.
Physical
A physical examination is required before your surgery. Your surgeon may ask
you to go to your family doctor to complete the examination. Please bring any
papers, forms or X-rays your doctor may give you to the Center.
If possible, please have your physician’s office fax your physical exam report
to the Day Surgery Center at 651-241-5067.
Makeup and jewelry
Please remove all makeup, nail polish and all jewelry — including pierced
jewelry for all body parts — on the day of surgery.
Valuables
Do not bring any valuables with you to the Day Surgery Center.
Smoking
Smoking is not allowed in the Day Surgery Center. Please do not smoke after
midnight on the day of your surgery.
Dress
Wear casual, loose-fitting clothing for your comfort on the day of your surgery.
You will be provided with a gown, robe and slippers to wear during surgery.
If you wear contact lenses or glasses, please bring the case with you.
Call your surgeon
If you have any change in your physical condition during the time of your most
recent visit with your surgeon and the day of your surgery, contact your surgeon
immediately. Report even minor health changes such as cold, fever, persistent
cough or rash.
Accompaniment
Please arrange for another adult to accompany you on the day of your surgery
and to stay with you on your first night home. You will need this person to
accompany you home when you are discharged after surgery. If you don't have
someone to accompany you, your surgery will be canceled.
For your protection and safety, you will not be allowed to drive after your
surgery.
Surgery times
Please be aware that your surgery time is approximate, therefore you may want
to bring reading materials and reading glasses if needed.
What to bring
Make sure to bring your insurance card, Medicare or Medicaid numbers with you
on the day of surgery so that Day Surgery Center staff can complete your registration
and insurance forms. If this is a worker's compensation injury, please bring
all pertinent information.
You should also bring your prescription drug card, if you have one, and money
for any prescription charges that may not be covered in full by your insurance.
Interpreter services
If you need an interpreter, United Hospital will arrange for a qualified interpreter
for you free of charge. To comply with federal standards, United discourages
family members of the patient to serve in the role of an interpreter.
Instructions and questions
If you are not going to be home or available by telephone on the day before
your surgery, please call the Day Surgery Center at 651-241-6842 for instructions.
It is important that a staff member talks to you before your surgery.
Please be sure your surgeon's office has your home and work telephone numbers.
If you have any questions or concerns about your anesthesia, call 651-241-5317.
