Cooking for Wellness
Cooking for Wellness is designed to teach you how to plan and prepare tasty
low fat, low saturated fat, low cholesterol and low sodium foods.
The class covers the following :
- U.S. dietary guidelines:
- low fat, low saturated fat, low cholesterol foods
- low sodium foods and seasoning with herbs and spices
- ideas for quick and healthy recipes that taste great
- nutrition facts and label reading
- hands-on application of how to modify recipes
This class is for anyone who wants to incorporate the above guidelines into
their lifestyle.
Class highlights include:
- food demonstrations and food preparation tips by a chef
- opportunity to sample foods demonstrated

CPR/Heartsaver class
Heartsaver course provides:
- heart smart techniques — how to identify and prevent risk factors
- adult CPR, rescue breathing and obstructed airway
Registration
is required at least two weeks prior to the start of class. There is no fee
and parking is available in the blue

Inpatient cardiac education
In this comprehensive, individualized inpatient program specially trained therapists
teach each cardiac patient about heart disease, including thorough instruction
about reducing risk factors.

Inpatient pulmonary education
A comprehensive, individualized program in which specially trained respiratory
care practitioners teach each pulmonary inpatient about their disease or condition,
including thorough instruction on breath techniques, medication administration
and activities of daily living.

Nutrition education
Nutrition counseling and education for inpatients and outpatient by registered
dietitians.

Patient/family library
Patients and families can use the library’s books, videos, audiotapes and other
education materials regarding the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
Topics include nutrition and cooking, diet, analysis, stress management, exercise
and family dynamics. Patients are welcome to use the materials in the library
in the Don Reioux Family Center or check them out for use at home.

Stress management
Both individual and group stress
management counseling are available by calling 651-241-8337.

Tobacco cessation/intervention
A one-time consultation is provided for all adult patients at United Hospital
who are current tobacco
users or who have smoked in the past year. The consultation is provided
by Cardiac
Rehab staff and includes the risks of tobacco use, a readiness assessment
and documentation of a cessation method that they will attempt. A packet of
written resources is given to each patient.

Former heart patients serve as mentors and visit current cardiac patients for
